Hi Y'all ... after a somewhat crazy week and a smashing gig on Saturday night, I had a spectacular day on the American River Sunday. It was the first day I was able to see the regular crowd; and yes Tears, Frank and Gayle were there. I think I might have overdone it a bit on the shoulders and upper back, but it's a hazard of the activity.
Hope everyone had a great day!

I had a great (though fully-clothed) weekend at Reef Campground north of Petaluma diving for abalone. I came back empty-handed but had a fantastic time regardless - the young seals in the cove were intensely curious about what we were doing down there and closely trailed us; they're so amazingly cute underwater, like fat aquatic puppydogs :) -

Mon, June 13, 2005 - 6:55 PMOh yeah, that sounds amazing .... I always wanted to learn scuba, but never had the time or cash at the same time. I grew up and lived a lot of my life in Orange County and there were a ton of great dive beaches there.
Yep, I'd play tag with some seals ... dolphins too! -

Fri, June 17, 2005 - 6:37 PMActually abalone diving is done without scuba equipment (by law). It's all freediving with a snorkel. I usually go a few times a year, so if you want more info I can tell ya all about it.

Fri, June 17, 2005 - 6:46 PMI've had adult sea lions want to "play" when I'm 25 feet down, it's pretty scary when a 600lb "puppy" decides to nip at your fins while you're down that deep... -

Yes, it was snorkel not scuba.
They were young-ish & small-ish harbor seals, not adult sealions - my friend went into deeper water and had a giant sealion bark at him a bit and follow him closely enough to freak him out a bit. (It was my first time diving so I stayed in the shallower water, no sealions, just the seals.) I really did try to avoid them but they were having none of it - they didn't nip or act aggressive in any way, just observed closely. I guess I was lucky - it was fun and I'll definitely go again, but this time we'll look for a place without seals in sight! (Though I'm told seals are a good way to know if sharks are nearby - if they all suddenly take for land and act alarmed, time to get out.)
