today at the beach

Dropped into San Gregorio today for the first time this year. One of the things I like about this time of year on the beach is seeing all the weird crap that the winter storms washed up. I saw a perfectly good fishing net half-buried in the sand. I thought about taking it home and hanging it on my wall until I realized it would make my house look like a cheap seafood restaurant. San Gregorio is so long it always seems deserted. Almost spooky. You half-expect to see CHarlton Heston screaming at a half-buried Statue of Liberty, "You maniacs!... You blew it up!". It's a great place to take someone when you want to private picnic for two all by yourself. Also at San Gregorio you can leave your clothes in the car since the parking lot is on private property. It costs $5 to park there but I've never heard of a break-in like sometimes happens at other beaches. Not to much sun today. I could barely see my shadow. I walked from the trail to the end of the beach and back and only saw about a dozen people all together even though it's well over a mile. It was a nice hike on the beach, though. The windbreaks mostly survived the winter

  • Joe,

Is it safe to go in the water there? How long was the drive?

    Thanks

I've seen people swimming there, but not often. It looks OK. Seems to be shallow for a long ways out. It has to be a pretty hot day before I'll even go in wading so I am not the best source of information. San Gregorio is about 10 or 15 miles or so south of Half Moon Bay. The actual entrance to the state park parking lot is about 1/2 mile south of the parking for the nude end. It's really easy to miss the entrance to the nude parking area it's just a gravel road with a gate. Most people go past it then turn around at the state lot and come back.

      • Have you been to the general stores in San Gregorio? It rocks! On weekends they have a posse of Stanford Profs on Harleys who go, and there's usually live bluegrass or folk music - sounds like Appalachian stuff. It's really, really fun. The store is about a half a mile down the road, when the sign points to S.G.
