Gay vs. Straight beaches

topic posted Wed, April 6, 2005 - 1:18 PM by  Dave
Well, "versus" isn't the right word, but a good point was raised in another thread that I thought was worth a new one. If anyone knows of which beaches are famous for being "open", mixed, or "doesn't matter" that would be useful information.

For the record, I'm straight, but am comfortable with gays. Unless I'm being hit on, in which case it's just an unwanted sexual advance. It would be akward going to a "gay beach" and feeling like the odd-man-out.

    Hi Dave,

Baker is a good bet for mixed in SF. Its got the older guys, younger, nude, non nude, woman, small children flying kites, Asian men fishing in full winter coats, and a bunch of seals, oh ah, gawkers standing in silence just mesmerized by the fact that naked women are only 100 feet away from them.

No one bothers anyone else UNLESS that person is drunk/obnoxious. As in, two very insecure drunk and obnoxious young ladies presented themselves at Baker one afternoon "Hey LOOK AT US WE'RE NAKED!!!", yelling and such.

So sure, a gawker/stalker came over and started bothering them, but if it had gone any further than that I am sure the rest of us (me included) would have jumped up in his face.

BTW- for all to know- a federal park cop regularly patrols Baker - sometimes on a horse. I wouldn't be worried there.

Now an almost totally gay beach is just around the Baker Beach Rocks - Golden Gate beach, closer to the bridge. But its a more difficult to get to. Too dangerous to just go around the big Baker rocks. So there is a trail from above. That's were you;ll find guys somewhat discreetly having some sex behind some rocks/sheltery things at the back of the beach.

i don't really remember any others in SF. These two beaches are on Federal land and there is (amazingly) no specific federal law against nudity.

That's another thing I like about Baker- I'm not "getting away with something".

Let me know if anyone is heading out there on a Mon, Tues, Thurs or Friday afternoon.
  • I've been to Baker, Red Rock, and other beaches in the area, and I've never experienced (or even witnessed) a guy-on-guy "unwanted sexual advance" (guy-on-girl--plenty o' times I've seen that). YMMV, but I tend to chalk that up to urban-myth/paranoia.

As for intentionally-inappropriate-behavior-designed-to-get-attention, I have a funny story about a woman on Baker, various foodstuffs, and some sloppy eating habits.
    • Hmmm. I have been approached quite a few times on Baker. People coming up and just sitting down to talk, and people edging their blankets closer and closer. Some guy came to tell me that someone was watching me and jerking off. So, for women, it really can be creepy even though we're just lying there wanting solitude. Having said that, if you go to the far end of the beach, there's a little kind of `in crowd' all gathered together, and they're pretty protective.

I've also spoken to straight guys there who have been approached by gay guys.... Unusual though, because if you climb over the rocks to a little beach next to Baker (closer to the bridge), that beach is actually known to be a `pick-up' place for queer men.

      • I've seen some pretty uncomfortable situations at Red Rock. Last year I deleted a ton of pictures off of digital cameras. The first argument they give is 'fuck you, its a free country'. Fuck you, those pictures aren't leaving the beach. Call the cops and sue me. Yeah, locals at nude beaches are protective. We used to have this one CREEP that would drop coins on the beach during low tide when the kids were down by the water and then position himself to watch them bend over for them. I've done everything from shine a mirror in some far-away asshole's lens to confiscating videotape. We all do it down there. Its a nice, happy, hippy beach and the biggest problem we've had there have been uncool assholes trying to make it in to something gratuitous.

There are two places where certain people's IQ drops thirty points the second they arrive: Nude Beaches and Disneyland.
